WAKE-UP in United Kingdom

WAKEUP is a European clinical trial investigating the safety and effectiveness of the clot-busting treatment (i.e. Alteplase) in patients who develop stroke during sleep or with unknown time of onset. These patients are currently untreated, as the drug can only be used only within 4.5 hours of a stroke onset time. It is estimated that around 1 in 4 admissions to hospital with stroke happen during sleep. There are approximately 150,000 strokes in the UK every year.

The trial includes patients up to 80 years of age, presenting within 4.5 hours of symptom recognition and have no contraindications for MRI. An MRI Brain scan will be performed to determine if the stroke occurred within the previous 4.5 hours. If the trial criteria are met, patients will be randomised in a blinded fashion to a clot busting drug (i.e. Alteplase) or a placebo. The patients will be followed up to 3 months to monitor outcomes. The trial outcome will influence the decision for extending the use of only licensed drug treatment to this group of stroke patients.

In the UK, several acute stroke centres are recruiting patients into this trial. These are detailed below:
